Complaining about a washing machine
A washing machine bought as a consumer can be complained about for 2 years under the Sale of Goods Act if the fault existed at delivery.
Last updated: 2 October 2026.
A washing machine is a typical larger purchase where the complaint right in the Sale of Goods Act matters. The period is 2 years from delivery for faults that were present then. For the first 12 months the fault is presumed to be original.
The store can choose repair before you can demand a new machine or your money back. A repair must happen within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience. If it does not, or the repair fails, you can go further.
Keep the receipt, model and the date the fault showed up. A price guarantee at an appliance store is a separate matter and lives in the store’s own policy. This text is not legal advice.
